A Strange but Real Hate Crime
The incidents of this story are based on a real case that happened a few years back. There used to be a family with four members, a father, a mother, and a daughter and son. They lived in an apartment with a huge front yard and a thick, high wooden fence surrounding the entire residence. The fence was about seven feet high and it had an iron door to it. The father was a doctor while the mother was a house wife. The children were both in the fifth grade.
Every day the whole family would wake up in the morning to prepare the kids for their school and hustle them to their school bus. Soon after, the father would also go to the hospital to meet his patients and take care of his job's needs. The mother would simply continue her sleep after she takes care of her family's needs in the early morning. The mother developed a habit of sleeping in her children's room after they are gone since the noisy neighbors make it impossible for her to sleep in her original bedroom; she always closes the door behind her to guarantee the ultimate quietness. The family used to always lock both doors, the fence door as well as the main door to the house. But over time they began to go easy on the front door of the house and just depended on the door of the fence.
On a routine Wednesday morning the family woke up as always to get everybody ready for their business, whether it was the hospital or school. The mother, as always, assisted her husband and children and then went back to sleep. But this was no ordinary Wednesday morning, somebody, for some reason was planning something terrible for that house, and the execution day was this morning!
While the mother was sleeping, she thought she heard repeated sounds of things breaking and falling apart. She was halfway between being asleep and awake, so she dismissed the sounds and assumed that they came from the noisy streets or from the neighbors, and besides, she was too sleepy to get up and check things out, what is the worst thing that can happen?
Later on the mother woke up and was scared to death. As she got out of the children's' room she noticed that the radio was broken as well as her bedroom's mirror, a couple of chairs, the bathrooms toilet, and the television screen. Although the situation was devastating and scary the mother's greatest fear was not due to the broken items but rather to the fact that the intruder could still be hiding in the house and could come and attack her at any moment while she was alone.
She immediately informed her husband; he calmed her down and told her to go quickly and check on what is important; her jewelry and their cash savings. The wife hastened to her bedroom. She immediately noticed that her jewelry drawer was already open from the night before, a person could easily see from a distance that the drawer contained jewelry. She counted and checked the jewelry and found it complete. The bag of seven thousand dollars hidden in the same drawer was also contact and not missing a dollar. She then informed her husband and both were comforted that nothing major was stolen from them.
But this confused them even more. Why would someone brake into their house and start destroying everything in his path without stealing a penny, even though the gold and cash were right there in front of him? The only conclusion that they came up with is that this person wanted to damage them or scare them out of hate. They remembered that they had a small argument with one of their far neighbors who was not particularly fond of them moving to this neighborhood. They highly suspected him of taking part in this attack.
Unfortunately the family was reluctant to inform the police for fear of complicating the case or magnifying the incident. On top of that they did not have any camera or surveillance system to allow them to verify who was behind this case. This incident caused them many feelings of distress, fear, and unrest. And the worst part is that they did not know who did it.
This entire ordeal could have been easily avoided if the family invested in a basic burglary alarm as well as a security alarm system. In fact if they had even one security camera they might have been able to catch the perpetrator and immediately submitted the information to the nearest police station. A burglary alarm system would also do the trick since it would automatically notify the nearby police that someone just broke in the house. Either one of these measures or both would have lessened the amount or even eliminated the emotional stress of finding that someone broke into your home and stole your property.
In the worst cases the family could have invested in fake cameras. These devices are effective in deterring away criminal activity, they literally make the perpetrators freeze and reconsider invading such a dangerous and risky place.
The problem with security and surveillance is that it is the last topic in most people's list of priorities. It only becomes the number one priority when an incident happens and people become victimized by it, but unfortunately this might already be too late. The incident might cause you thousands of dollars or even the life of your loved ones that could have been easily prevented if you thought for a minute about your security measures. Many people still depend only on locking the windows and doors to prevent thieves from burglarizing their home. But they can not realize that if a thief wants to invade your property he will have hundreds of ways to enter your property. A baseball bat, a knife, or even a gun might be too late or not effective at all when push comes to shove. And besides, why would you wait until a thief enters your home to start defending your property and yourself? Why not take the lead and do it early in the process by getting an security camera system?
You see, when an intruder decides to invade a place, he does not just jump into it, he first monitors and checks out the place, the surrounding area, and he may even monitor your personal habits for quite some time just to find an appropriate time to make his move with the least amount of risk. Another major issue that he looks for is if you have a surveillance camera system or a burglary alarm. If you have installed at least one outdoor camera or put a sign indicating that the area is monitored by surveillance video, he will immediately rethink his choice about your property and might even move away to another unprotected location. So take advantage of this fact and act today to secure your property and loved ones from eminent danger.
