A friend of mine was telling me how he has a severe sleeping problem that makes him sleep walk and sometimes not able to wake up even if a bomb literally goes off in his house. He further explained that sometimes when he wakes up he can not feel his surroundings for a while even though his eyes are wide open, this goes on for a while and then he can get out of bed normally. I was amazed by his sleeping habits and found them interesting and dangerous at the same time.

My friend continued with a story to further give me an example of how bad his sleeping situation is. He also told me that this is the first time that he discovered that he has a serious sleeping disorder. He said that he originally lives in Florida and he only comes to Texas to visit his family and friends every once in a while. One time he was returning from Texas to Florida during the summer season, and when he got to his Florida apartment he was so tired to the extent that he turned on the fan and slept on the floor while his window was open. He did not feel anything until he woke up about two hours later to turn on his fan which was mysteriously turned off. He went back to sleep and woke up after a while only to find out that about 40% of his household items were gone. He was puzzled because when he first came into the apartment and before he slept, everything was there and nothing looked abnormal.

He thought about what happened and the only thing that he could come up with is that he was robbed while sleeping. But how could that be possible? How could anybody be able to enter into the apartment while he was there? And how come he did not wake up at the first sound of the intruder? He noticed that he left the window open, and he figured out that the intruders must have entered his house through it. He suddenly remembered a fuzzy dream that he saw while he slept. He recalled a dream of seeing a male figure with a gun telling him “Dude, you have just been robbed” he replied “Ok” and went right back to sleep. Everything started to come together now and the puzzle was solved.

The thieves came in through the window and opened the apartment’s door from the inside and then stole almost everything in the house. The dream that he saw was not a dream at all, the thieves were actually talking to him and he was not aware of what was going on due to his sleeping disorder so he responded to them in his state of unawareness and just went right back to sleep.

At this point we were both laughing at this weird but unfortunate incident. I then asked him if he had some sort of security cameras system or a burglary alarm installed in his apartment and his response was negative. I advised him to get one especially because of his strange sleeping case. If he can not protect himself due to his sleeping disorder then why not invest in something that will protect him and his property from future invasions. Not only will these cameras capture an image of the perpetrators but if the thieves realize the presence of these cameras soon enough they might even be scared to attempt to rob the house due to the high risk of getting caught. He promised me to think seriously about his security measures and to reevaluate his safety.
