You could have known someone a lifetime and still not really know him. Twin Cities’ resident Bonita knew her former boyfriend had been in trouble before, but nothing like this.
“The FBI came and said he was suspected of a couple of bank robberies,” says Bonita.
Police say Bonita’s former boyfriend is the man in a photo, captured by a bank surveillance camera last week. Authorities say the man walked into a bank in south Minneapolis and then another two days later in northeast Minneapolis, gave the teller a note demanding money and took off.
How the suspect was caught involves a twist of circumstance.
Bonita once lived with the man in Minneapolis. They dated for ten years. Bonita says it was a rough road, until she finally left.
When Bonita returned on Saturday for her things, he wouldn’t let her in. Someone called police and one of the officers who responded noticed something about him.
“They kind of correlated the fact that he looked pretty close to a FBI news release that had come out earlier regarding a bank robber that had robbed two banks in Minneapolis,” says Sgt. Jesse Garcia with the Minneapolis Police Department. “Something kind of clicked. This is a classic example of a fish jumping in the boat”
Bonita got a good look at the photo too.
“When I saw it there was no doubt in my mind, no doubt,” she says.
And so, the man Bonita knew for a decade was the bank robbery suspect police had been looking for and they might still be looking for him had they not met her.
“I’m looking forward to seeing justice done. It’s long overdue,” says Bonita.
Bonita says she had no idea her former boyfriend was wanted for bank robbery. We’re not naming him because he hasn’t been charged yet. There is no word yet on when authorities plan to file formal charges.
