LANGSTON — Langston University officials announced Monday a 30-day moratorium on campus social events and the adoption of 24-hour security measures.

The announcement came a day after five people were shot after a party at the school’s gymnasium.

School officials said that within 30 days the campus will have two 24-hour security checkpoints through which all students, faculty, staff and visitors must be cleared. All vehicles will be subject to search, and drivers must show some form of identification. The police officer and security guard at the checkpoint will keep a copy of the driver’s ID on file.

The two gates off old State Highway 33 soon will be closed and locked, according to the news release.

“Our students’ safety will always remain a top priority for me,” Langston President JoAnn Haysbert said Monday.

“I simply will not rest until I know that we are doing everything within our power to ensure nothing like this happens again.”

The university said the victims and one man who was arrested are not Langston students.

An electronic gate will be added at the Langton Commons, an apartment complex across the street from the university. Residents will be required to have a card key to enter, and a video camera will be installed to catch the license plate of every driver entering and exiting the property. More security cameras will be installed at the other university apartments and will be monitored at the Langston police station, according to the news release.

Langston University spokeswoman Ashley Gibson said she did not have any information about how much the security upgrades will cost.

Anthony Crawford, the student government association’s activities coordinator, said he welcomes the security changes. He said visitors will be less likely to cause trouble if they know campus police are tracking them.

Crawford said students have been asking him if they’ll still be allowed parties on campus after the moratorium. He said events will continue but with more security.

University police still are investigating the shooting that took place about 1:10 a.m. Sunday in a parking lot behind Jones Hall, Gibson said in a news release.

Only one person has been jailed in the shootings. David Stephens, 23, was booked into the Logan County jail on a complaint of recklessly discharging a firearm, said Rob Groseclose, Logan County chief deputy sheriff.

Groseclose said Stephens is being held in connection with “a secondary shooting,” and he did not know whether any rounds fired by Stephens struck anyone.

Langston officials have not released the names of the victims, nor have any of the law enforcement agencies involved.

Of the victims in Sunday’s shooting, three were taken by ambulance to OU Medical Center in Oklahoma City. Two other victims were taken to OU Medical Center in private vehicles. Their medical conditions were not available Monday.

Campus police on Sunday also arrested a woman they say used her car as a deadly weapon.

The car struck a person who experienced minor injuries and was not taken to the hospital, according to the news release. Neither was a student, according to the university.
