Port Forwarding AT&T Motorola/Arris Routers

The AT&T Motorola/Arris router is one of the most popular routers on the market, opening ports on daily basis. This improved router is much easier to work with than AT&T 2wire/Pace model. These newer routers have the following models: Arris NVG599 and Motorola NV6510. You can access this router by using AT&T famous default gateway IP address of

Port Forwarding acts as a messenger and guard for your internal and external connection. Opening ports for your Digital Video Recorder (DVR) is necessary and the first step for you to achieve remote access for your surveillance system.

When you open ports, you perform a set of rules for your router’s gateway, telling it which data to let in and out through a set of ports associated to a specific IP address.

Here is how to do it:

  • Open any browser, both on Windows OS or Mac OS.
  • In the address bar, type the default gateway.
  • Select Firewall at the top.
  • Press NAT/Gaming.
  • You be taken to a page for you to type your Device Access Code. This code is found on your modem/router. This is not your wireless SSID password. Locate the Device Access Code, type it in the file and press Continue.
  • Under Custom Services à Select Add/Edit Services
    1. Create Service Name. Name can be generic, ex: DVRHTTP
    2. Global Port Range. Starting and Ending port, ex: 80:80
    3. Base Port. Always your starting port.
    4. Protocol: TCP/UDP/Both, ex: Choose Both
    5. Press Add.
    6. Since most DVR/NVR need more than one port forwarded, repeat step a to b. Service name cannot be the same so choose different names.
    7. When you are done, press Return to NAT/Gaming. Double check before returning, trust me, otherwise you will need to perform 3 to 4 steps before you are able edit and add an additional or missed port.
  • Under Application Host Entry, select your Service. Sometimes by default, depending how new your router is, first Custom Service you have created will be automatically selected. If not, please find your Custom Service name and it should have a * in front of the profile name, ex: *DVRHTTP
  • Select your DVR/NVR’s IP address in the Needed by Device.
  • Press Add.
  • Do this for each Custom Service you have created. If you are using multiple devices, make sure you have selected the correct service which corresponds to the right IP address.

Final step, go to canyouseeme.org. Check all your ports and make sure they all return with an Open message.
