Security Camera Systems: 2K vs. 4K Leave a comment

In the past, the standard for security cameras has been 1080p resolution, but now most companies distribute 2K and 4K video resolution. 2K and 4K cameras each have their benefits, so how do you know which one is right for you? 2K (super HD 1440p) cameras and the ultra HD 4K cameras are becoming more popular, and the quality of security camera systems is increasing every years.

2K Security Cameras

2K cameras have a resolution of 2560×1440 with a 4 MP (megapixel) image sensor. They are mainstream and produce a more precise and sharper image than 720p and 1080p; this allows them to capture fine details like faces and license plates from a distance.

4K Security Cameras

4K cameras can also identify face details and license plates but from a further distance. They have a higher resolution of 3840×2160 at 8 MP. 4K cameras are at the top end of surveillance video quality. Although 4K provides better quality, they require more bandwidth and storage space. You can use video compression technology to reduce storage consumption. If you use H.265 encoding, it can help save up to 50% of space over the previous H.264 encoding method.

2K vs. 4K

2K cameras are a more cost-efficient option that is still of high quality. If 1440p resolution is enough for you, then 2K is a perfect option. 2K cameras are great for homes and small businesses. 4K while costing more, is a better option if you want the highest possible quality, and you want to view a large area with one camera. 4K security cameras are recommended for medium and large businesses, retail stores, parking lots, warehouses, hotels, and other big residential and commercial properties.
