Why Use a Power over Ethernet (PoE) Camera Leave a comment

Power over Ethernet devices is able to plug into ethernet ports and draw electricity from that to operate. By plugging into an ethernet port they also connect to the internet over the same cable from which they draw their power and that saves a lot of time and energy on wiring. Why is that relevant? Because it makes PoE cameras a lot easier to install than their counterparts and because of their convenience, their maintenance costs throughout the years remain very low as well.

Saving time and money

PoE technology does not require an additional power supply. As a result of that, the need to have an extra AC power outlet for the network component of the surveillance system becomes unnecessary. Even if you have multiple cameras as a part of your surveillance system, having a singular source of power is enough. Why does that matter? It greatly reduces the cost of wiring which is a big issue in setting up surveillance systems

Transmission speed

PoE technology has some of the best connectivity in the surveillance industry. That is one of the main reasons they are used so frequently. That is also why the number of systems using PoE is increasing rapidly. PoE systems can deliver extremely high data transmission speeds without sacrificing on other ends. PoE systems have the capability of delivering up to 1 Gbps using either a CAT5 or a CAT6 cable.

Giving you options

Because PoE cameras do not require you to have a separate power outlet, you have a few options that you can use to set up your surveillance systems. Because you do not have constraints like the power outlet, you can set up your cameras in an optimal location that you want. Not only is it more efficient but it will also give you more peace of mind. How exactly does a PoE system give you so much flexibility? Because you do not have are dictated by the placement of the power outlet, you can place the IP cameras on ceilings, high walls, or even outside if you wish to do so.

Scalability

If you currently have a security system and you are looking to upgrade or you want to get a security system and do not know where to start, this might be the right option for you. Why? Because IP cameras give you so many options when it comes to moving, changing, or replacing certain parts of your surveillance system. Not only is it more convenient but it is cheaper as well.

Enabling Central power control

Using a surveillance system that uses PoE technology allows you to monitor and control the power output for the entire system centrally. In the event of a power outage, devices like Ip security cameras can become inoperable unless there is a backup power supply. That process is very difficult with IP cameras since you need to have multiple UPS setups throughout your property. However, with a PoE, you can use a single central UPS to back up your cameras. Not only is it cheaper and more convenient, it provides you better security as well.

Reasons for selecting IP PoE systems

  • Higher resolution: The analog cameras that are used in most surveillance systems offer around .4 MP whereas Ip cameras offer from 2 MP to 10 MP. Because of the high-resolution options, it gives users a lot more flexibility in terms of what standard of images they want from their system
  • Remote access: IP PoE systems give you the capability to view your feed 24/7 from any device you wish
  • Option to upgrade: IP PoE systems are very easy to scale up or upgrade. Because there is only one PoE switch, the infrastructure that would need to change when you change or switch to a better system is minimal
  • Better analytics: because of improvements in technology, most IP PoE cameras these days come with intelligent features that allow the system itself to analyze the footage and detect any possible changes to the footage.
